In service sector, so called 'team leaders' are not coming from the bottom through his/ her efficiency or quality in most of the cases as per my observation. They are 'made' as team leader through and for some other considerations.

It is expected that leaders should have good capability and should have quality to attract respect of, at least, most of his/ her followers. Leaders have to lead from the front.

But if the facts are different - say if the leader is of very inferior quality, having no clear cut idea about the scheduled works, the whole work will ultimately fail to give expected result.

If you want to see a good example, just thoroughly study any of the Government sector of India.

Features to be met in this type of leadership:

1 - Indefatigable . If the thought of logging in to a midnight meeting or holding a coaching session at 3:00 in the morning gives you a mental rush and a blast of energy, you’re on the right track. Managing remote teams often means managing across different time zones and can require working long days and oddball hours

2 - Company Evangelist . My personal experience is to have on-site kick-off meeting together so that cohesion & rapport can be built and visible leadership can be demonstrated.

By all means if possible try to organized periodic onsite team building / retreat so that tele-workers can get together face to face - because finding once relationship is built physically, it offers fuels for the virtual relationship to last longer.

Inspire them by shearing hard work and being an example of honesty.

In this case Leader must grow the faith and trust in his follower "Charismatic leadership"

Only one idea adding: Also with remote communication it seems to me necessary to have personal contact to the inner circle of persons, and here are three kinds of communication concreivable. General information and orders, reports of the responsible leaders, questions etc, personal exchange. Please note that there are much differences in relation effects in different kinds of communication, a phone talk has another effect than e-mail and SMS, or a video-conference. Note also gender differences in prefering the kind of communication. Female communication partners normally have more social needs and react positively if there is some personal background in a contact.

If the leader uses email, SMS, phone, and on-line chat, as well as online conference software like goto meeting or webx, or even zoom, they can have synchronous online meetings with subordinates on different projects. They can also use online chat and Google Hangout which are also synchronous. One can also use the same learning platforms, we academics use in our online classrooms like Canvas, Blackboard, WebCT, etc. By using these forms of communication, this will satisfy diverse preferences of ommunication regardless of culture or gender. Moreover, a leader must set the same example of honesty, integrity, and good communication skills as well as being a good listener, which are the same principles effective face to face leaders use

I think the best ways of ensuring a good influence between a leader and his or her subordinates:

1. The leader must be transparent in explaining policy directions and strategies in achieving them to the subordinates.

2. Good coordination between all levels of work among workers must be achieved through excellent and easy communication channel. The leader must keep his/her doors widely opened.

3. The leader must set a good example of hard work, dedication to work and dexterity in executing organizational tasks so that the subordinates will walk his/her path. S/he must be punctual and report on time so that subordinates could mimic that shining example.

4. The leader must always seek for avenues to enhance and grow the organization by looking for and grasping every innovative ideas, technologies and marketing opportunities while imbibing this important ideal for organizational growth in the subordinates.

5. A leader must be honest with the subordinates while showing deep respect, care and more importantly, recognition for their efforts and sacrifices that keep the organization running.
