Organizations facing an unstable business environment and intense competition need a leader who has the skills of agile thinking. Can this leader make decisions without affecting the results of these decisions by his overconfidence?
In my opinion no. No one is perfect, so over confidence is prohibited for leaders, what controls the quality of decision is the experienced advisors who are working under the guidance of the leader, one advisor for the appropriate function of the administration.
overconfidence is a not a clear concept. Somebody use this concept as consequence of inadequate decisions (with negative effects which are seen much later), other see it as a condition of inadequate decisions.
My Answer is Big NO. Over Confidence it self say Over (Over Dosed) so How could some one Over Dosed Leader could make Accurate or Right Decision for His People. Leaders should have to be in Right and Healthy state of Mind to Make Decisions for His People. Regards
Is leaders with overconfidence able to make accurate decisions?
Overconfident leaders can make accurate decisions when they have the similar past experience or with ample data points to justify their particular decisions. Overconfident leaders without the abovementioned but rather pretend to be overconfident or leaving the outcome merely based on probability of chance might not make accurate decisions.
There is a fine line separating self-confidence and recklessness and there are a lot of decisions that need speed, firmness and take responsibility for the decision.
Do you trust overconfident leader or not? If you trust, your answer is Yes, and if you do not trust, the answer is No. This is because, trust is the foundation of leadership.
No if they make decisions based on quantitative methods (concrete data and analysis), but if they make decisions based on their subjective judgments and intuition decisions may be wrong...
Sometimes over-confidence can be confused with charismatic or independent and authoritative leadership. There are good examples of these working, and working well. Leadership by committee can lead to leadership by accountants, which has probably more drawbacks.
A thin but important line separates charisma from overconfidence. A charismatic leader has a clear vision of the direction and destiny, and can sway the people the way he wants. The claims of an overconfident leader will prove hollow in a matter of time.
Running a country wisely is certainly not a one man show. Lessons from the past history prove that overconfident leaders are bound to err, and as a result, it is good for the leaders to seek counsel from well versed experts in various disciplines.
Irina, I looked at your addition and yes overconfidence is necessary in life. Just look at animals threatening a rival. They blow themselves up.
But there is the tendency to confuse a natural survival mechanism with arrogance which again is external, based on power or the belief of someone that they have power.
Overconfidence based on the false belief of one's exaggerated knowledge, that make such leaders close the doors of the viewpoints of others, certainly blurs their judgment and leads them to the pool of failure in their leadership.
Granted, positive confidence that is well founded on true knowledge with the acceptance of the golden views of others is good and lead to lands of precious minerals in leadership.
Overconfidence refers to a biased way of looking at a situation. When you are overconfident, you misjudge your value, opinion, beliefs or abilities and you have more confidence than you should given the objective parameters of the situation. Obviously Overconfident Leaders could not make a right decision for their Public and Nation as they would misjudge the Countrys situation. Overconfident Leaders might destroy the Countrys peace, Economy, relationship with other countries and later on leave the country in mess and trouble.
The overconfidence effect is a well-established bias in which a person's subjective confidence in his or her judgements is reliably greater than the objective accuracy of those judgements, especially when confidence is relatively high. Overconfidence is one example of a miscalibration of subjective probabilities. Another word for overconfident. adjective. “Pick a leader who will make their citizens proud. One who will stir the hearts of the people, so that the sons and daughters of a given nation strive to emulate their leader's greatness. Only then will a nation be truly great, when a leader inspires and produces citizens worthy of becoming future leaders, honorable decision makers and peacemakers. And in these times, a great leader must be extremely brave. Their leadership must be steered only by their conscience, not a bribe.”

No.not at all, rather overconfidence in leaders lead to rash decisions by making them over optimistic about the success of any risky attempts. Overconfidence makes leaders arrogant that deteriorate the interpersonal relationship with peers and subordinates, fuel to ignore the facts and lead to the denial of any sincere suggestions made by others and hence all these take leaders to misleading decisions.
We have come to believe that the excess of everything turns bad. Being overconfident could lead to autocracy. A transformational leader must accidentally make agile thinking and/or decisions, but the effectiveness of that decision must come as a result of cooperation. My conclusion however is that, being overconfident will further make the business environment unstable.
Managers and/or leaders are either overconfident or being realistic. The chief executive officers, the board of directors and others that are charged with decision making in firms should not give in for cognitive biases as it has a significant effect on their decisions.
Directors that owns high shareholding should not be appointed as CEOs as higher stock holding prevents them from internal and external company discipline, thus creates an avenue for managerial overconfidence which can lead to adverse decisions.
Persons who had held or holding political appointments should not be appointed to the board of directors, because it is highly detrimental to decision making.
