I am trying to analyze the miRNA-Targets of the FOSL1 gene but I am facing a particular problem.
With Targetscan 7.2:
-> 2 different miRNA Targets for FOSL1 got predicted.
The article 'Molecular characterization of the microRNA-138-Fos-like antigen 1 (FOSL1) regulatory module in squamous cell carcinoma' (corresponding author: X. Zhou, 2011)
-> stated 6 miRNA-Targetsites for FOSL1
genecards showed
-> 88 miRNA-Target sites for FOSL1.
Which source can I trust and how can these numbers distinguish so much? (2 to 6 to 88?)

Because they are predicted targets based on several algorithms to screen the transcriptomes, and each database uses different algorithm. Some targets are experimentally validated while others are predicted. Remember that miRNA expression and activity are lineage and cellular dependant. Most likely there are more than 88 miRNAs, but not necessarily all relevant to your analysis.
