The short answer: get to know your students.

By getting to know your students, you can gauge how effective your teaching has been by the comments your students make, whenever you talk to them. Another helpful paradigm to consider is this: teaching is an extended conversation on your favorite topics, especially if you have learned to connect with your students.

Teacher's knowledge of theories related to the subject matter in particular and teaching process in general is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for meeting the targeted teaching goals. As you have very rightly observed, there is a lot more to good teaching than knowledge. By recognizing learners' critical needs, teachers should adopt a task oriented teaching approach focused on learner engagement and collaborative work in order to satisfy the demands of the so called techno-based societies.Notably, the application of digital technologies in face to face classes can pave the way for learner -learner and learner -teacher interactions providing opportunities for what is known as serendipity learning whose main objective is to help learners reap the wonderful benefits of self discovery.

The University should provide the right environment. In the developing countries, their government should provide useful facilities that can aide learning. Advanced or developed countries continue to advance because students and teachers have access to advanced equipment and facilities. For a specific instance, some students in developing countries have not even touched a compound microscope even at the university level.

Theoretical background to course in the university is very crucial but not sufficient to build a total and thorough bred graduates in our world today. The practical aspect of every course of study is vitally important to make the students self reliants and become umployers of labour and contributing to the economy of their country. Education has traditionally focused on the basic “3Rs” of reading, writing and arithmetic. However, as the ever increasing pace of technological innovation drives changes in the world, educators must re-evaluate whether the skills they teach truly provide their students with the best opportunities to succeed in school, the workforce, and in life overall.

This naturally leads to the question of what those skills are or will be, and while there are other excellent suggestions out there, Pearson’s 2014 edition of “The Learning Curve” report lists the 8 skills below as those most necessary to succeed in the 21st century.

Besides the relevant evaluations of learning mentioned in previous comments (by considering cognitive / education science and face-to-face understanding), I would add that students' skills should be developed toward their best insertion in job market. They must acquire the adequate behavior and skills to find new opportunities and to evolve in their career in companies or academic institutions.

I understtand that we may have different methods, several machines, laboratories to improve our teaching practices, but the teaching/learning processes should be based on the basics of education, that is, planning,, teaching and evaluation. If that structure is observed, almost all cases allow any methods of teaching. Conferences are usually lectures, there are a few participation from the audience and yet, they are rich expeciences. They share knowledge and motivate professionals very well. And some laboratory practices may become boring if not carried as part of a whole.

This will greatly depend upon the policy of the University. At Gujarat Technological University , we have been taking following measures to ensure skill development in students.

1. Organizing Corporate Professionalism awareness programs by inviting very senior professionals from MNCs/ industries

2. Continuous programs on development of entrepreneurship skills among the students

3. Programs for enhancing soft skill and employ-ability skills and spending minimum 2 hours a day introduced in the academic time table.

4. Fostering Integrated training and placement cell at University level known as I-TAP

5. offering part time skill development courses under the Government of India's Skill India Mission

6. the most important feature is Students start up cultures -this we started when Dr Akshay Agarwal a great Visionary and a former Vice chancellor of GTU. Our University started GTU Innovation Council . This council created 25 Innovation sankul in the state wherein the principals of colleges in that particular area- sankul and the industries located in the vicinity of those colleges have been making joint efforts for training, for placement, soft skill to be industry ready , professional networking,

Usually I am encouraging my students to visit my office, also I have a weekly meeting with my students, through the meeting become easy to have their unofficial feedback nicely. Second thing when you finish your lecture spend 3-4 minutes asking 2-3 students say with the sense of humour did you understand any thing today? Dear Prof. Md Zafar Alam Bhuiyan , I think we should give the relevant examples as much as possible to make theoretical matters into perspective, and allow them to consult frequently when they face difficulty to understand any topic.

I think that students should be treated with respect, but also requirements and limits should be placed. Require from yourself and from students. Be open and listen, including how to listen to criticism - also from the lips of your pupils.
