BEBM Bronchial Epithelial Basal Medium is specially designed to support the growth of human and animal primary derived cells. Media systems have been specifically developed and optimized for various cell systems. BEGM™ BulletKit™ is serum free and has been optimized to grow diseased and normal bronchial epithelial cells.
Media are supplied in several formats: Basal Medium - contains no growth factors, cytokines, or supplements. SingleQuots™ Kit - growth factors, cytokines, and supplements, BulletKits™ - basal medium and SingleQuots™ Kit packaged together. You can use DMEM or SAGM medium with 10% FBS.
I do not have experience with culturing BEAS2B. But my colleagues use HUVECs. They use high volumes of similar serum free culture media to grow HUVECs. Their opinion was that whether they make the media in-house purchasing individual components or buy complete media from companies, they do not save much money when they add up the man power cost and time.
There are several companies out there that make such media. just Google the term!
We are not planning to make it in lab. We were just looking for alternative vendors. There are multiple vendors available in market. But I just wanted to take recommendation from someone who have used from particular vendor other than Lonza so that we can be sure that the media really works. Otherwise it may take time to order from different vendors and test
I work with BEAS 2B also. They also grow well with LHC-9 which is commercialized by several companies such as Fisher Scientific. It is way less expensive and at least my cells grow just as fine. Hope I helped you.
We grow primary bronchial derived epithelia in Stemcell Technologies Pneumacult EX (expansion media) and Pneumacult ALI for the differentiation part. We have had great success with it (more so than Lonza). https://www.stemcell.com/pneumacult-ex.html
We tried BEGM kit from Lonza but we grow BEAS2B cells in LHC-9 medium from Thermo Fisher now. The medium is cheaper and the cells grow in it very well.
According to ATCC, you don't have to supplement LHC-9 with any anything. The media comes with everything you need to culture your BEAS-2Bs. However, if you are experiencing any inconsistencies with cell culture of BEAS-2Bs, BEBM media is another alternative that has been recommended, though more expensive.
Beas-2b cells should be cultured in BEGM medium. we have tried to culture them in LHC-9 or DMEM FBS medium or ATCC own medium or others, cells undergoing either differentiation or EMT, loss of its originnal phenotype.. we are prepareing our manuscript refering this.
