Chlorpromazine (CPZ) is an antipsychotic drug of widespread use. Early studies have shown that human erythrocytes (RBC) become cup-shaped in the presence of CPZ, due to its asymmetric incorporation into the membrane bilayer (Sheetz MP, Painter RG & Singer SJ. J Cell Biol 70: 193, 1976. It seems possible that CPZ can compensate for the morphological change that uccurs upon RBC sickling (at least in part) and ameliorate vaso-occlusive SDC crisis, Are there studies on this matter?
