In your case, it would depend on the species and how they are taken care of in a standard animal facility, the tendency to hibernate, the number of generations of the breeding, etc.
I recommend you confirming your findings by asking someone else to carry out the experiments for you in the same lab, asking someone in another lab somewhere else before you make a solid hypothesis.
