Hi, Could someone explain the primary differences between deep-seated landslides and slope destabilization? In particular, definition and characteristics, mechanisms and triggering factors, monitoring and mitigation, and Any references to relevant literature or case studies would also be greatly appreciated
Deep-seated landslides are rooted in bedrock, are often slow moving, and can cover large areas and devastate infrastructure and housing developments. Deep-seated landslides usually occur as translational slides, rotational slides, or large block slides.while Slope stability refers to the condition of inclined soil or rock slopes to withstand or undergo movement; the opposite condition is called slope instability or slope failure
Hi Wandi. They are two very different concepts, not really comparable. Slope destabilisation is a process that leads to lowering of the stability of the slope. i.e. to the increase of likelihood/probability of slope failure. Any process that increases the probability of failure is a form of destabilisation. For example, excavating the toe, thus increasing the slope angle, changnig the groundwater or surface runoff regime, thus increasing the risk of soil/rock saturation or perhaps surcharging the crest of the slope, and many more different actions/processes. A "deep-seated" landslide is much less well defined, but as Pram Baboo described it, usually involves larger land mass and significant thickness of the slope and affects a larger area. On the other hand a block slide is typically not a mechanism of a "deep-seated" failure, as it typically only involves a few blocks rather than a significant volume, but here lies the lack of clear definition.
