Measurement of Social Responsibility Effectiveness (Sustainability measurement) is an assessment aimed at determining the effectiveness and purposefulness of actions taken by a company within the framework of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
Sustainable development and CSR activities are complex concepts, encompassing a wide range of issues such as habitat protection, energy consumption, stakeholder satisfaction, and financial performance. Therefore, measuring the effectiveness of CSR activities differs from measuring other dimensions of business activity—it requires greater financial and time investments as well as different evaluation indicators. However, the ability to measure the actual impact of social responsibility on value creation and to link it to the effects on the organization's business activities provides an opportunity to introduce changes in the approach to the issue and further appreciate the intangible values such as social capital and trust.
Examples of indicators used in the measurement of CSR activities can be categorized into several groups:
- Economic indicators, e.g., investment and capital expenditure indicators, innovation measured as the number of new products to the total number of products.
- Ecological indicators, e.g., waste management, eco-productivity indices (e.g., the amount of materials produced to the amount of raw materials used), eco-efficiency indices (e.g., CO2 emissions relative to revenue).
- Employee indicators, e.g., wage disparity, the number of employees participating in training, the ratio of newly hired employees to the total number of employees.
- Social engagement indicators, e.g., financial resources allocated to social investments such as education, health, and sports; the number of volunteer hours, the ratio of local taxes and fees to the total revenue of the municipality, charitable donations.
