What type of antibodies you are using? Monoclonal/polyclonal
If polyclonal: What is the source of antigen used for raising the antibodies
When you use unpurified or partially purified virus produced in tissue culture for immunization to raise polyclonal antibodies, you can expect the polyclonals to see uninfected lysates also. This background can be reduced by adsorbing the antisera with cell culture lysates.
HSV-1 is an enveloped virus. The envelope is chock full of cell proteins. If you are using a polyclonal antibody it is likely to have some reactivity to cellular proteins. If you are using a monoclonal then I would ask what viral target is it directed against. I know HSV has some viral proteins that are quite similar to cell proteins (MHC for one).
And just to make matters even more confusing, it is possible that your western conditions are contributing to the cross reactivity.
