If we take our father Adam as an example, he is the founder of the first family, and he was a prophet also. We find that this sequence of idealism is stopping directly by the murder of one of his sons, on hands the second son. Therefore, according to the first human family on earth, this sequence is not realistic at minimum.
Very valid and nice question. Thank you Zafar Alam. Societies’ smallest component is core families. Generally speakibg, If the countries conponent looks healthy, that society country would be healthy. Bringing up the kids in a healthy core family and extended family members have upmost paramount importance.
Yes, Its hypothesis and good parents means parents with honesty and ethical and moral values. I have cite example also in my first answer and I am not stubborn or fixed in my hypothesis/assumption and thats why I have placed question here for sharing the other scientists.
The way presented "Good parents...good country" is more like a Utopia. It is so simplistic, it is not close to reality. Reality is that people are different in their orientations, values, ethical considerations. Good parents can have five good children and one who may always deviate. Each neighborhood has large proportion of good families but there is always one rotten fish that can spoil the pond. In each country there are safe neighborhoods and there may be crime-riddled ones.
Md Zafar - You have mentioned some good qualitative variables but I think you have missed the most important variable i.e., 'education'. In modern society parents, family and neighbourhood have lost their primary role of socialisation. It is only the school which has become the focal socialising agency and acts as a bridge between family and society. Another important variable is the mass media which has become the greatest teacher of present day world.
In making a good nation, a good country and finally a good society; role of education in the form of school or mass media has a tremendous part in shaping the destinies of common people.
Thanks for your contribution. My focus is only family and the informal education may come here like family ethics, etiquettes, norms and values. Yes, education is an important variable but it has some formal structure outside of the family.
Family is the first institution of leanings. Other things also considerable here. But when the learnings of the family is not good, other things come to a failure. After family neighboring factors are coming and still I want to keep my study withing the informal education of the family, nothing more. Thanks
Again very good topic and excellent discussion. Yea, its rational thinking that good parents provide good children. That's why selective breeding for different veterinary animal including fish were introduced now a days to get more yield. Likewise in human being what Napoleon said 'give me a educated mother I will give you a great nation'.However, we should not seek a good person from a religious fanatic family/ society/country.
My filer as a good father means my son is bad. If you love your family and caring them carefully, you will save your adept. Forgive me, my family in my hurt.
If we take our father Adam as an example, he is the founder of the first family, and he was a prophet also. We find that this sequence of idealism is stopping directly by the murder of one of his sons, on hands the second son. Therefore, according to the first human family on earth, this sequence is not realistic at minimum.
It starts with the individual. An individual with good intentions, discipline, morals, ethics, civic-mindedness, work ethics, etc. is the starting point. This would result in good parents, good children, ...etc.
Definitely It has been started in the individuals . but family is the first and main institutions of learnings. Thats why we consider the family where a person will learn the things first.
I agree with you, the family is the nucleus of the first community and depends on the success of children will fail and thus the success of the entire community will fail, parents are a good example of the children
What is the meaning of "the good society"? People have very DIFFERENT ideas about the it. Who should be responsible for the development of the good society? Do we have any shared goals? How do we distinguish a good society from a not-good society? Is this even a sensible question?
For example, as you look at ALL the countries around the world, can you identify "a good society" and "a not-so-good society"? If you cannot then this discussion is a waste of time. For a question to be sensible, you should be able to show an example or at least describe the characteristics so that we can TRY and identify such a society.
Boutheina Hachem This progression from good parents to good children to good society to good country is a theoretical possibility. I agree. But is there ANY scientific evidence or research on this? Is this simply your personal opinion?
Boutheina Hachem For example, I can think of another hypothesis. Good country leads to good society, leads to good parents, and to good children.
There are so many DIFFERENT pathways to a good country. It is not obvious that what you suggest is the correct one for ALL countries. I think we need to look at the empirical data and scientific research on the issues. Otherwise we are just exchanging subjective opinions without any basis in reality or evidence.
Boutheina Hachem I hope I did not upset you with my remark. My apologies if my remark upset you.
I think the question is VERY important. However, we must try and find some evidence to support your hypothesis. This is the scientific approach. Maybe we will find that you are correct. Again, we have to do some research.
J. M. Koli Dear Mr. Koli Sir ji, Could you kindly explain WHY you agree with Dr. Zafer. What are your reasons? Are your reasons based on scientific research and evidence? If yes, please provide the references to the evidence.
Pankaj Tomar Dear Tomar Sirji, you have listed some common ideals in the abstract. They sound very good. The problem is how do we implement these ideals in practical ways. Such theoretical ideas are USELESS unless you can propose effective ways to implement them.
if you live in a third world country, you will understand me...
if your parents sell drugs, you re going to be a trader...
you are the son of your environment..
and if you live in a country where there is everything( education. social security, peace, electricy , water, respect......) you must be a good person....
So I have further queries, its only good parents/society who make children good/civilized, then what is the role of God here? or If God make good society or country then we can conclude that God presence is less in Africa? or Middle East? or many trouble countries.
Muhammad Abdullah Al Mamun Dear Mr. Mamun, I am not sure how I should respond to your statement. I think we need to define the meaning of "good society". If we do not define then we cannot say which country is good or not good. A country that has some troubles does mean that it is not good unless you think that a country with trouble is not good. I am still thinking about this complex issue.
Family consists of parents and children living in society and in a country. I would also appreciate and be happy if it says all are good. On the other side it is limited to how we see and understand. On the other hand, if all treated to be good, then the disturbances in the society or in country will not be there.
My main criticism is the LINEAR nature of the hypothesis: Good parents lead to good children, lead to good society, lead to good country. Reality is much more complex. There are interactions between all of these different elements.
Research is not always limited to the process of tools and fixed techniques (Crosswel, Research Design, 3rd Edition) . There are many types of research you know that I think. Qualitative , Quantitative, Mixed methods . Research are solely defined in deferent arena in different way. Suppose, a topic of medical won't be conduct the research as a Fashion Designer does. If the method is observation for the Doctor and Fashion Designer, once again the differences will come differently.
Now, I like to explain what about the meant of Good family, Good society , Good Country. May be you all have seen my first answer here. I added and example as model as Japan. From family to early schools Japanese students are taught , etiquettes, morality, humanity, social norms, society values which have come from Zen Buddhism. Internally , there may be a lot of limitations in the Japanese society, yet is it not a good country by its outer look? Is it not a good society ? may be you will not agree with me but I think, Japanese family are the best in the world for informal education inside the family which thresh-holds are in the national development. For assets , Japan has nothing but the valued manpower which accords it the one of the mighty economy of the country.
........A country or community with good moral characters is the fruit of moral families and persons.
A country or community with good scientific achievements is the fruit of science oriented and dedicated families and persons.
A country or community with good health standards is based on families and persons following and implementing proper health measures... Very good contribution.
Md Zafar Alam Bhuiyan Dear Mr. Bhuiyan, Thank you for the specific example that you give about Japan. So in your opinion Japan is an example of a good society. With this as an example, we can examine other countries around the world that have similar characteristics. Japan is a relatively homogeneous society so they have common shared values. If a society is diverse and heterogeneous, then it is more difficult to have shared values and have a common vision of the common good. May I request you to give another example of a good country so that I can learn more from you. Shukan, Bhuiyan.
This is nice question, indeed. A family consist of parent and kids. We see that a good or amicable family when guardian is amiable. This parent can only make good children. When a family is good, after that, an appropriate society will easily create.
Dear sir, May be you are opposite of the hypothesis. It may be and we honor you. As a researcher and individual anyone may have an opposite philosophy in the society and doesn't matter. Here we are simply discussing the matter and justifying the probabilities here based on observation method. In fact, no tools and techniques here and this is not an argument. I think without mental peace a country can't be termed a good (peaceful ) country . There are many countries in the world you will see around with huge money power but not peace. I cannot term any country's name here to hurt the same people in this platform. Basically , South & East Asian people are in mental peace with their serious family bonding which you will not find many parts of the world. Never and never a family bonding of Cambodian people is as like European, though the Cambodian , even, Laos, Vietnam's people have no purchasing power as like EU. There is no inner bleeding in the hearts of these Asian people which suffering by the broken and ill-structured people in the so called developed world. You know, this issue being a professor. I think this is not the forum to teach anyone or making the fruitless arguments . You are a senior professor , working in the first economic power of the world. I think , best answer might come from your side as you are on the multicultural society where peace is purchased by money , not by heart and that is in vain. family structure is feeble and less important where society values the individuals. I think being from that standard, family dominant society calculation is not possible.
In this Holy Month of Ramadan, I wish to deeply and sincerely apologize if my remarks have offended you or anyone here in any way or form.
I am trying to learn and understand. The statement had many components.
Good parents lead to good children,
Good children lead to good society and
Good society leads to good country.
Are these simple relationships true? Can we find evidence of this in reality?
The same word “good” is used for parents, children, society and country, and this makes the statement unclear. Perhaps it is my inability to understand the deep meaning here for which I have only myself to blame, and I will try harder to understand. Again, my sincere apologies.
I think that there may be no agreement on what a “good” country is. For example, we can define a good country as a country without crime; a good country can be a peaceful country; a good country can be a country that only eats vegetables. A good country is a country without honor killings. A good country is a country that outlaws “foot binding” and “sati”.
Unless we get some clarity on the multiple meanings of good, the discussion will be going in circles. In a diverse country, there are multiple conceptions of good, and these ideas can be in conflict. In a diverse country, we must be tolerant. How can we be tolerant of someone who believes in something that I find is “not good”? If my parents told me that it is wrong to kill animals, and people are killing animals, how is it possible for me to say that the people are good?
I have many questions but few answers and again I apologize and hope to learn from out of you.
Sir, its your greatness !! There is nothing for apologizing here. We are in the same forum for research and sharing our knowledge to be enriched. I know very little and try always to learn from others . Thank you for your kind contributions and I hope you will continue this in future.
If everyone are good, everything looking around is good. Hence, there is no way to think. But all the people really are of different behaviours and attitudes and what the above said is ideal and the latest is real. All of us should be in real sense.
In the abstract, the idea of a “good” society is very philosophical, general and theoretical. How can we be against a good society? Once we introduce a distinction, between a good and a not-good society, we will embarrass some countries.
Unless we say that ALL countries are good. Then what is the point of the distinction?
We must make it practical by thinking of concrete indicators.
For example, suppose we believe that a good society must have peace. Then we should look for indicators, such as number of crimes per 100,000 persons in a society.
Suppose we believe that a good society is a happy society. Then we have the index for happiness.
Suppose we believe in the Human Development Index (HDI) which is a standard and well-known indicator.
Suppose we believe that a good society must be “free of poverty”, then we can look for indicators of poverty.
Suppose we believe that a good society must be “free of corruption”, then we look for a corruption index.
Suppose we believe that a good society should treat women in a fair manner, then we can look for such indicators.
With such indicators, there will be clarity in what we are discussing.
In a society with diverse values, social norms and preferences, there may be less consensus on the features of a “good” society.
Suppose we believe that in a good society, men and women should dress modestly. The problem will be shifted to the definite of modesty.
Suppose we believe that in a good society, everybody should rest once a week. But some people may want to work every day.
Suppose we believe that in a good society, people should not eat meat, then we have conflict in values.
Suppose we believe that there is only one true religion. Then there could be conflicts if everyone does not agree.
A good society should have an effective mechanism for balancing the conflicts in social norms, values and preferences. A good society must be tolerant and open to compromise.
Even if there is agreement on the features of a “good” society, there may be no consensus on how we proceed to make progress towards the achievement of the good society.
For example, we may all agree that corruption is not a feature of a “good” society. However, there is no algorithm (or recipe) for reducing corruption.
It is the same for many of the other problems that we face in society, such as homelessness, unemployment, poor health and low levels of education. These are wicked problems, in the technical sense, and may be beyond the ability of science to solve.
In communication, clear definitions are very important.
My mother did not read bedtime stories to me because she was illiterate. She could not supervise my schoolwork. She did not smoke but she did drink and loved to gamble with her friends. She would beat us when we misbehaved.
My father was too busy working and hardly spent any time with me.
By most definitions, my parents were not good. By the grace of the Almighty, the Merciful and Compassionate, I turned out okay. We were a happy family.
A beautiful question that reminds us of the system called Islam in the formation of the family and then the society, he invited the man to choose a righteous wife who care for her husband and her home and improve the upbringing of her children as well as invited the woman and her parents to choose the man who is the religion. The creation then called on the couple to raise the children and take care of them from the stage of pregnancy so that Islam allowed the woman to pregnancy not fasting and he is obligatory for fear of tiredness and care of the foetus and also called on parents to choose the best names for their children and to improve their upbringing and to be held accountable for that as the children called to be Building righteous people with their fathers especially when fathers grow up and all this means building a good family which is the foundation of a good society
What are the characteristics of a good society? How do we recognize a good society when we see one?
Perhaps we can start with the ideas and indicators that will have the most agreement and then move down the list.
Life expectancy: Note that this is a measure only of the quantity of life in years; it does not consider the quality of the life during the later years.
Infant mortality for those under five: This is a common indicator, and people generally agree on it.
Happiness and Income per capita. There may be a small correlation between these two concepts. In some cases, the correlation might be negative.
Access to education at the different levels, and among ethnic, social, cultural, linguistic and religious groups in the different regions of the society
Access to health care at the different levels, and among the ethnic, social, cultural, linguistic and religious groups in the different regions of the society
Access to employment opportunities at the different levels, and among the ethnic, social, cultural, linguistic and religious groups in the different regions of the society
Law and order, and normal security. For example, people can travel freely and without fear
Speedy justice and access to the courts
Minimal corruption
Accountability of civil servants and leaders
Social security and social welfare
Infrastructure such as transport, internet access, water and sanitation
Please help me by adding more relevant characteristics and features of a good society
Suppose we are interested in conducting research on the determinants of a good society. What does this mean? It means that we want to identify the causal factors that would lead to a good society. Thus, if we can change these factors, then we can move towards a good society. We need to be clear about the boundaries of the “good” society. The factors that lead to a good society could depend on the culture, social norms, history, geography and history of that specific society. It does not make sense to talk about a global and
The first step is to give a practical definition of a good society. The problem is that everyone has a different idea about the characteristics of a good society, and there may be no consensus on the definition. This presents a huge problem for the researcher.
Suppose we agree that a good society is a peaceful society. What does this mean? What would be indicators of a “peaceful” society? Is a peaceful society the same as a safe and secure society?
We could find data on the different types of crime and create an index of crime. However, we would have a different model for a good society if we define it as the happiness of the people.
The second step is to develop a theory about crime. We can conduct a literature review and find out what other researchers have found in the past and then we can develop a model.
