Even after treating the effluent, the water which is separated persist some amount of colour, what are the biological, physical or chemical methods available to remove the color of the water completely, by which this water can be used for drinking purpose.
Hi Mr Narendrakumar, there are several methoda were available for treatment of textile industrial effluents, such as physical, chemical, electrochemical, bioelectrochemical and biological methods ect... But all these methods involve in treatment of treat textile wastewater with respective of COD, BOD and color removal ranging from 20 to 96%. Still there is a limitation and cont use these treated was for drinking purpose. There are some advanced technologies such as membrane filtration, reverse osmosis etc which can treat these secondary wastewater with high efficiency and we can use that water for drinking purpose also.
Hi Mr Narendrakumar. A few weeks ago, I performed field trials in 3 textile industries in Bangladesh using reactive dyes. I removed color up to 99% in 2 minutes upstream of the biological treatment which removes the COD and BOD. After upgrading this biotreatment the treated water will be very clean except for the salt which would require UF + RO as to produce potable water.
As indicated above, reverse osmosis (RO) can only be the FINAL step. Using RO without proper upstream treatment will result in fast and irreversible fouling of the precious RO membranes with low permeate flux at high TMP and hence in huge operating costs (energy, membrane replacement, ...).
Yes, Mr. Bruno Peetes ... the cost is very high. that's the reason i was trying for alternate methods. is there any other biological, physical or chemical methods which can be cheaper and effective. the investment for a RO plant for a textile industry is not really practical because of the same reason.
Hi Mr Narendrakumar. At least for reactive dyes, we have a proven chemical (up to 99% color removal) + biological solution as indicated in my previous post. Our biological solution is based on integrating enhanced biosorption and hydrolysis in various activated sludge (AS) based systems (continuous flow + SBR ones).

Use of Oxidants is the practical and cost effective solution and to make textile effluent potable after colour removal, the technically viable and proven technologies are membrane separation.
Sorry to respectfully disagree Mr. Veeranagu Nagarajan. High quality textile dyes are specially designed to resist oxidation including UV irradiation because nobody wants the colors on his/her garments to fade after laundry or a walk in the sun. Hence even the most advanced oxidation processes (AOP's) applied to dyehouse effluent are not very cost-effective. Therefore we applied a totally different and novel approach without oxidants. Unfortunately I can't share the details on this blog but trust me it works very well at least on reactive dyes as demonstrated on site and indicated above.
Well, Mr.Bruno. Issue is removal of color in the dyeing effluents and not in the textile material. Intensity and nature of oxidants used for color removal in the dyeing effluents can not be the same during the laundry process or a walk in the sun. Refer literature and published papers in this regard or to physically see such treatment pay visit to Tamilnadu, India where achievement of zero liquid discharge for all textile dyeing industries has been made mandatory. Further, after concluding your so called novel study, share the results which may facilitate to install such treatment methods in our textile cluster for color removal.

I know what I am talking about after 35 years worldwide experience in wastewater treatment and Yes, I am familiar with the literature and the non-sustainable and expensive AOP treatment used in textile dyehouse wastewater treatment worldwide (not just in Tamil Nadu) including the problems related to ZLD and finally No, as already said, unfortunately I am not in a position to share the details of our novel treatment which has been demonstrated/proven on site (i.e. far better than a "so called novel study"). Nevertheless, I wish you success with your textile cluster.
