i am doing my research in energy optimization in routing process in sensor networks.
how do you calculate the estimated and total cost of the link between nodes?
Is their any formulae to link metric in routing and also provide the comparision of various routing protocols?

In general, there are many considered costs while evaluating any routing protocol.
We can cite:
* delay, on each link, so, we have to find the route minimizing the delay between the source and the destination node.
* cost of each link, so, we have to find the route minimizing the cost between the source and the destination node.
* flow, on each link, so, we have to find the route minimizing the total flow between the source and the destination node.
* distance , so, we have to find the route minimizing the distance between the source and the destination node. The best route is the one leading to the least distance value.
....etc
In some cases, we can take into account a combination of criteria.
For example, if we consider minimizing the delay while routing (forwarding) a message using high degree nodes. So, we have to minimize the term (D/degree).

There are many factors that affect the energy consumption in WSNs, for example, geographical location of the sensors, inter-sensor distance in a cluster, channel estimate energy, power circuit, channel loss, mobility factor, and residual energy.
