Have you got a free and really powerful software for managing specimens in freezers?
A php script with a mysql database, a free software with a clear GUI or something similar?
We're full of books with ugly grids and we are bored to use this "old" system. Any suggestion?
(also a LIMS solution can be ok, but opensource would be better)
I don't know of a good open source application, but our lab uses LabCollector LIMS. LC is web-based and stores entry information in categories (e.g. strains, plasmids, supplies, etc.). Each entry gets a barcode, which can be printed out onto labels. You can also reorder reagents and supplies through LC. The storage information is pretty comprehensive - freezer maps that include positions in boxes, drawers, shelves. The position info is included in each entry and you can do mass imports from text files (tab-delimited, or comma-separated) with most of the info you would need for each entry entered as columns, including freezer position.
Try Quartzy, It's free and very user friendly. It is also good for managing orders, and all lab inventory

Quartzy...not...
But...Something like Labguru "storage" tool, standalone...? This is the point...I'd like to have the storage tool only...off-line, multiuser...and free :P
