What are the best alternatives for ethidium bromide in terms of how safe it is to work with?
Other factors including price and resolution that it can produce also obviously play a part as well.

There are several of them now a days...one prominenet in SYBR I and II ...and for certain applications you can also use silver staining

I would certainly recommend SYBR safe which we have used since switching from EtBr. Good sensitivity and safety obviously. Comes as 10000x solution and can be added to gels or also to the tank though i have not tried the later but it has been used by some in our institute.

SYBR Gold can stain both single strand and double strand DNA, so you save money. Very good resolution also.

SERVA DNA Stain G is also non-carcinogenic & works perfect both for DNA or RNA. I think its also much cheaper compared to others. Give a try !
