I am exploring topics for my master thesis and I am very interested in business model innovation for sustainability applied to the mining sector since in countries such as Colombia, where I come from, we have a development/conservation dilemma given the mining boom experienced in recent years. I would like to explore options and if possible, examples of innovative mining companies that are re-thinking their business model towards material recovery rather than extraction.
Goran Roos had some very useful ideas about this, with regard to the mining industry. However there are a number of examples in the sustainable development literature. Car share programs are an example, as is the practice of leasing photocopiers, and the development of modular carpet tiles.
Maybe by this time you have finished your thesis. However, take a look in urban mining for a "new" way of getting materials.
