I have no experience in the quantification of ethanol in animals. However, you could try a pre-precipitation of proteins with TCA (trichloroacetic acid) to a final concentraciónn 6-8%.

I have used this procedure in humans with various enzymatic kits and the results are perfectly transferable to those obtained by GC / HS / FID.

How much alcohol are you giving your animals?

I see, that may explain why the levels are so high, particularly if its the only source available, I guess they could easily reach 250mg% when in a binge. If in doubt double check with GC,.
