I've been doing some research with Emotiv Epoc, but it has a lot of disadvantages, for example it is almost impossible to evaluate female participants with long hair and small heads - the device does not get any signal from them. Furthermore Emotiv sometimes looses signal from some single electrodes and the quality of the data that it provides is not so great.
Do you know any other low-cost EEG devices that you would recommend for studies regarding emotions?

OpenBCI uses a clinical grade analog to digital converter chip, the Texas Instruments ADS1299. Many research and academic institutions are utilizing it. Any types of electrodes can be used: gel/caps, paste, dry.

Our lab is looking at moving to Open BCI now that Emotiv is making their hardware require the uploading of data to their web system and charging on a per recording bases (in blocks of 50 or so) for a monthly fee. They seem to be making it impossible to use their equipment for science; they have not been great to us over the last few years, either.
Current Open BCI systems provide multiple sizes for the headset and upcoming designs will have more electrodes. Another advantage of the Open BCI hardware is that it allows the electrode placements to be varied. Some of their headset designs have many more 10-20 locations available than recording channels, so that the montage can be reconfigured for different questions (unlike the Emotiv that has fixed electrode locations).

That said, we're just starting to make the transition; we have not fully evaluated the Open BCI systems (we want to order our first in a week or so, depending on budgets). There is a substantial literature evaluating the Emotiv EPOC system, although with mixed responses--it is clear from reading that literature and our own work that Emotiv measures real EEG signals and provides enough quality for some types of research work, but that it also works much less reliably than standard research systems.
Finally, how much of a problem are you having with head size? We have reliably recorded from a variety of head sizes in two studies, and while we lose the Pn electrodes regularly, we can usually get the others online even with relatively small heads.
