It is really nice idea to develop android apps for Bioinformatics. As we all know some general problems are like sequence alignment, genomic regions, Handling of large scale database etc. When I was searching for an android based bioinformatic applications, I found following links :

As an android user and naive android developer, I can say android platform is the place where number of users are increasing exponentially. If we want to help bioinformaticians, computational chemist and biologist to understand biological problems, android applications can be a great source. I would like to quote Foldit (http://fold.it/portal/) helped scientist to understand prtotein folding, eteRNA (http://eterna.cmu.edu/web/) for understanding and help in synthesis of RNA's that consistently fold in expected shapes.

As of now the number android applications related to bioinformatics are very less not because the users are less but the vice-versa.

if you are planning to start development of bioinformatics related android applications then I would love to be part of the team.

Mobile apps for bioinformatics, i think you need the multiplatform mobile apps as its not all depends or use android.

Bioinformatics needs lots of node for visualization that required big data, i think you need to build it up under a web-based application such as python or java as its have optimization tools.

If use android consideration is can you optimize the app load time,how many data are you going to implant as rna dna or bioinformatics data related to big data complexity.

Thanks for nice comments, it looks that apps is need of time. If we wish to address problem faced by users, we need to adopt new technology.

An Android app I would add is the Mentha interactome browser. It is good for quick lookups when you are on the move. I think it is early days for Android in Bioinformatics, but if I was building anything web-based I would keep an eye on an Android client, for the future.

Can anybody give idea what type of application biologist would like to see on android. It is really difficult for senior scientist like me to adopt new Technologies. I think it is good opportunity for young researchers to adopt new technology.

In my view a biologist will need an application which can make their work easy and can be continued even outside the laboratory (computational Biology Lab) and while taking a walk.

An android application or Symbian or windows platform compatible application which can be installed on mobile phones, where the application can provide a facility to connect to the cloud computing server to run biological programs (here the data is already available on the server) .

For example an Interactive android application designed to use galaxy server for NGS analysis.

Even I can suggest for an application which provides discussion forum for biological problems. for example - an android application for SEQanswers, BioStar.

Here is an example (http://www.maizegenetics.net/field-informatics). This is what a biologist needs. For phenotyping work in the field, like phenotyping of maize, there are several functions we may need:

1) barcoding

2) phenotyping: both recording and measuring, like mesuring and recording plant height or area of leaf.

Sir, although it's a late reply but I just downloaded a fun game called "Genome jumper" created by Swiss institute of Bioinformatics where we can basically play with the human genome. It's sort of similar to Mario cart. I think such apps would create interest in younger kids (as well as older) and expose them to this field that is quiet unheard of, for them.
