I think one the most important to improve visibility of research is "profile image!"

Your researchgate profile image should accurately reflect who you are as a professional. When users are searching for you or land on your profile your picture is one of the first things that they see.

I prefer to publish in open access journal so paper is freely available for our readers. This is one of the important steps towards increasing visibility of research. Open access is another question of debate.

Visibility: Qualitative or quantitative:

1. For qualitative visibility

a. one should publish in low impact factor journal or open access journals for mass readership

b. Mass posting of their paper in one or more related group/circles, in linked in/ResearchGate professional networks

2 For Quantitative visibility: Go for SELF CITATION, and or sending Review requests on some sites/forums/circles/networks

Open Access Meets Discoverability : Citations to Articles Posted to Academia.edu!

"Using matching and regression analyses, we measure the difference in citations between articles posted to Academia.edu and other articles from similar journals, controlling for field,impact factor,and other variables. Based on a sample size of 34,940 papers, we find that a paper in a median impact factor journal uploaded to Academia.edu receives 41% more citations after one year than a similar article not available online, 50% more citations after three years, and 73% after five years. We also found that articles also posted to Academia.edu had 64% more citations than articles only posted to other online venues, such as personal and departmental home pages,after five years."

Do you have such experiences with Academia or with ResearchGate?

Seminars or presentations at workshops or conferences are useful for dissemination of the research outcomes.

ِDear Ljubomir Jacić cited a good article about how to boost your citations. According to their findings, papers uploaded to Academia.edu receive a 73% boost in citations over 5 years. So being a member of RG, Academia, etc. may be a good idea. However, I do prefer to publish most of my works in normal ISI/JCR journals rather than Open Access. In general, ISI/JCR journals have much higher quality than OA.

For me, I personally feel one should do the fundamental and applied research which is really useful to the society not published papers in High Impact factor because impact factor does not reflect of the research. Like this year Noble Laureates i.e. Youyou Tu and Arthur B. McDonald. BTW, visibility of our research is shown from our application of our research.

As inspired by @Mostafa, I have done some internet search and research about researcher's profile at different social networks, and I have found many fine analysis. I will attach link to very good article which bring comparisons of different networks in terms of features like photo, ..., and many other factors that contributes to researchers visibility.
