Is it possible that coefficient of static friction for wood is lower than other metal surfaces (cast iron & Galvanized iron).
I have referred several research paper but couldnt find such example
Anybody have experienced such behaviour while determining physical properties of flat grains like maize?
I think, first of all you have to consider your materials moisture content. What is your sample moisture content?
I have been studying maize at wet milling moisture content (15 to 45%)
The coefficient of friction has to do with the resistance of your sample as it moves over a surface (in your case wood, and metal). Usually, it is approximated by monitoring the point at which your sample pick up to move through the surface as angle of inclination of the surface is being increased from rest position. This point the sample begins to move indicate that it has overcome the resisting force from that point onwards. So the tangent of the angle of inclination at which the object begins to move is called the coefficient of static of friction. The simple question is what surface will give greater resistance to movement of your sample on them when changing the inclination angle of the surface from the rest position. This is why moisture content of your sample might be a factor too as mentioned. If the moisture content of your sample is high for example, there is a great tendency that there would be higher resistance to movement than when considering a dry sample. Also resistance to movement can also depends whether its a rough sample or smooth sample and so also the nature of the surface you are testing the material on too.
