Having done secondary metabolite profiling of a particular fungus, the next step is to classify the metabolites into various classes such as polyketides, NRPs, terpenoids, etc. How should one go about the whole business? Is there a simple way out for someone who has a non-chemistry background?
Is there a way of determining which class a secondary metabolite belongs to?

Can I ask what you did for the profiling, i.e. techniques? Unless you know the molecular structure of your compounds, there's very little you can actually do.
If you managed to identify some of the compounds, a literature search (or google, or even wikipedia) will tell you what class they belong to.
If you happen to know the genes responsible for production of those SMs, a blast search will tell you what they are.
Thank you Christian. Actually I have done LC-MS profiling of the fungal extract and have used Metlin database for compound search. I have the molecular weights, formula and structures. Now I need to classify the compounds into one of the classes that I had mentioned. Some of the well known compounds such as Penicillin and the 'statins' are pretty simple to classify, but the rest are quite confusing. Pubchem and Google search are not very helpful.
