I grow my cells on both plastic Corning 96well culture plates for most experiments, but for immunoluorescence staining I'm growing them on glass or permanox chamber slides.
One of the Chamber slides is of plastic (permanox) material and is compatible with formaldehyde fixation.
Is it possible to do staining in the 96 well plates instead? They're much cheaper and easier to handle.

you can do fixation and IF in 96-well plates, but you should use plates compatible with imaging. In case of multiwell plates, you have to use bottom optics, but the usual plastic plates that are used in cell culture have too thick bottom. Therefore, you will only be able to use 4x objective and fuorophores that do not need excitation by UV-light. Alternatively, you can purchase special plates (e.g., Ibidi u-plates) that have thin bottom and are compatible with imaging (there are both glass-bottom and plastic-bottom plates available). However, those are quite expensive. Still, I agree that handling of such plates is much easier than dealing with the glass slides, and you can perform screening and imaging of much larger number of samples.

You can use 96 well plates for IF. I have done the same with both fluorescent and HRP conjugated antibodies as per experimental requirements. All you need to take care during washing steps because in these steps many cells get detached in 96 well plates.
