I have utilized mediation analysis (Hayes process) in a cross-sectional study to examine the mediating role of a variable between two other variables. but reviewer asked me to avoid using mediation as the study is cross-sectional and you should replace mediation with association. I haven't seen such as thing before, and I guess reviewer isn't familiar with the foundation of mediation analysis suggested by Preacher and Hayes or Baron & Kenny’s approach. But I am not sure and I don't know how to reply or revise.
