The particle size distribution of the micelles was measured using a particle size analyzer. The dv 50 value of the empty micelles was about 2 um larger than the dv 50 of the encapsulated micelles. The distribution graph of the empty micelles was relatively smooth. Is this typical? I would also appreciate if you could provide an explanation for this.

Encapsulation in micelles is a process of hydrophobic interaction mediated by water. The water is affected by the surfactant and the ingredient. If the ingredient is less hydrophobic than the surfactant, then the size of the micelles increases and vice versa. The hydrophobicity of the surfactant and the ingredient can be compared by the distribution coefficient between octyl alcohol and water. Find tables and compare the surfactant and ingredient in your system.

You likely do not mean encapsulated micelles, i.e., micelles in a capsule, but rather micelles which solubilized (encapsulated) molecules. The size of micelles depends on their geometry, how they can be packed into the aggregate. This will change when other molecules are incorporated. Denser packing results in smaller size. In particular if hydrophobic compounds swell the interior of regular micelles they will have, however, larger size. If the ionic strength is changed size usually will change too.
