1,5-DAN is a fantastic matrix for MALDI ISD (in-souce decay) analysis. Can anyone tell me whether one can use the cheaper 1,5-diaminonaphtalene (97% purity) instead of the much more expensive product 1,5-DAN (matrix substance for MALDI-MS, ≥99.0% HPLC)?
Actually it is more than 200 (two hundred!) times more expensive. Does it really make a difference for the MALDI spectra?

You now have several options:
1. You simply test the new quality (compared to the previous matrix)
2. You use the previous matrix.
3. If you have the possibility of a preparative HPLC, then you simply clean up the cheap matrix by yourself. But I'd compare the costs of that with the possibility 2.

I've found another purification method for 1,5-DAN: Vacuum distillation (190-220°C, pressure: 10-30 mbar).

I don't see a reason why not. After all, the matrix in MALDI is in such excess to the sample that the purity within your limits will not matter much. And who knows, you may find some new funny thing! Fishing experiments we call them.
