Well, it is impossible to induce nitrosative stress without any ROS in tissue or cell culture media because NO should combine with ROS to produce peroxy-nitrite that is called nitrosative stress. If we use sodium nitrite, we do not produce NO, however, using L-arginine would be the better choice. Xanthine oxidase enzymes convert nitrite to NO, but I suppose under physiological conditions (non-stressed, non-pathologic damage) applying sodium nitrite is not able to produce nitrosative stress.
