We need to buy an RI detector for our Agilent 1200 HPLC system (connected to a computer running ChemStation). Given the high price of new detector I thought about buying a used one. Looking through eBay I found an HP1047A detector that look in good condition. The question is, willI be able to connect it to my system with logical amount of effort?

I think It should be OK. I connected a Chinese HPLC with Japanese RI detector to analyse sugars. The problem might be the software.I am using an adapter to help to collect the signal as suggested by the engineer. It works. I can show you my machine in pictures if you want.

Yes, you can certainly use an HP 1047A RID with your Agilent 1200-series HPLC system (or most any brand system). It provides an analog output (Integ: 0-2 V) and has a remote start (DB9) which can be connected to your HPLC system. The 1047 is an esp nice older unit because it has the front panel meter to show you the actual outputs too.
Connecting it to any modern HPLC system is a bit more time consuming and certainly more expensive overall. Depending on which exact type and version of software you are using to control your HPLC will determine how you interface the analog signal from the RID (or any other detector) to your system. For example: If you are using ChemStation or OpenLan/ChemStation, then you will have a choice of several hardware modules, but basically need an A/D interface (converter). There are many different versions of the A/D interfaces and not all of them are compatible with each of the versions of ChemStation. It is very important to only buy and use the exact model and version which is. Contact Agilent for help/advice (too much detail to post here).
A warning about buying a very delicate and heavy (~ 20 Kg) optical detector such as a RID off an auction web site. ~95% of them are broken junk. Most cost more to ship than they are worth. They ended up on the auction sites because they were damaged (plugged flow cells, broken electronics, contaminated, plugged/broken purge valves, broken heaters etc). True condition can not be judged by looking at them. Most sellers have no service training so only buy if you can return it at their cost if it is damaged.
Manny thanks! Since I wrote the question a friend have offered me a long-term loan of a Waters RI detector (not sure what model). Does this sound like a more promising approach?

The detector make/model makes no difference from a strictly functional point-of-view. Any older detector which outputs an analog signal can be connected to most any brand/model of HPLC. That part is simple. The hardest aspect to deal with most users (and the most expensive) is connecting the analog signal to the all digital modern HPLC 's hardware and software system (so you can actually use it). That is where you will put your time and money. The detector itself is the least expensive and easiest part to deal with.

The latest Agilent detectors (i.e. RID) will hook right up to the 1100/1200/1260/1290-series system and already output in digital I/O, not analog. Plug-and-play. The 1047 is an older HPIB (no Ethernet) detector dating to the 1980's (I bought and used one when they 1st came out). Any older style detector (Fluor/RID/ECD/ELSD...) can be used with any newer HPLC system. But you need an A/D (The A/D will interface to the Instrument). It has nothing to do with "ChemStation" software. You will need to purchase an A/D converter to bring the signal of the 1047 (or any analog detector) into the system. Either that, or buy a one of the newer Agilent RID's with modern digital output over Ethernet ($$$$). Please contact Agilent for assistance.

I would like to add one more question in this discussion. Can we connect any brand of RI detectors with any brand of HPLCs? Also, this HP1047A RID works with Shimadzu 2010C, if I use proper cables to connect?
Falguni: As already stated (please read my past responses), in general, ANY detector which outputs a std analog signal (DC Voltage) can be converted to a digital signal and input into most any brand of HPLC system. All you need is a compatible A/D converter which can be used with your system. Most vendors offer them. If the detector does not have an analog output (only a digital output), then you will need to interface it to a compatible signal bus that accepts that input. *To control injector start/stop signals, flush valve or other options, you will need to use other types of compatible cables and interfaces.
