My question is can we have higher order continuity inside an element while it has C0 continuity between other elements?For example a plane element has C0 continuity between elements can we increase the continuity inside the element by inceasing the order of shape functions?Can we have different continuity inside the element but C0 between others?is that possible?

When you use higher order element in the analysis, the continuity within the element will be better..yes it is true..higher order element mean the number of node used to simulate the problem is high..so continuity will be better and solution is going to converge with exact..and also it predict better non linearity ..if you are looking for non linear response then higher order element prediction is good..ok all the best in your research..
Of course, we can have different continuity inside the element and between elements. In spline theory this phenomenon is reffered to as defect. A spline s of degree n has a defect k (1 ≤ k ≤ n) at the node xi if derivatives s',s'',...,s(n-k) are continuous at xi but s(n-k+1) is discontinuous at xi. Thus, C0 continuity between elements corresponds to defect ≥ 1.
