Few groups are advocating application of S to cotton through foliar spray.Soils in North western India are saline alkali with pH >8.5 or more.Should application of S either to soil or foliar be advocated .
Dr. Singh, it may experience S deficiency although atmospheric SO2 is taken up and utilized by the aerial parts of cotton plants and the most important source of sulfur is sulfate taken up by the roots. In the saline-alkali condition, the divalent anion SO4 is taken up by the roots at relatively low rates, and long distance transport of sulfate occurs mainly in the xylem.
