I have data collected using the WHO STEPS questionnaire but having some challenges with getting it into an appropriate statistical tool for analysis. Anyone got some idea?
I think in this case the best software is SPSS; all types of descriptive and inferential analysis can be done through it. it is a free download software. besides
many free online guidelines are available to help via youtube and so on.
The most important things are:
1- identify your data type exactly,i.e: numerical, nominal,...
2- Do appropriate data validation method to reduce error of your analysis result.
3- find out which type of analysis you need to run according to your objectives and type
of data.
- SPSS seems not too much user friendly at first. It is also boring to key in a huge data. should be strong!
you can also use excel to key in and edit your data and import to SPSS.
Thank you Igor, Roya and Janet for your suggestions.
Indeed SPSS seem the best tool for this and the WHO have provided in their 'STEPS Analysis Programs', SPSS syntax files, but how to get this syntax files do the job of analysis has been a puzzle.
For example, I have collected three different blood pressure readings, weight and hight.....etc. Thinking that the SPSS would help me get the mean blood pressure readings and calculate the Body Mass Index (kg/m2) for the whole data, without having to do it one after the other manually.
Can you say what format/application has been used for data entry? I have used STATA for similar analyses. Depending on the software used for data entry/storage you may need to convert to another format for importation into STATA.
Hi Victor: In order to make the SPSS syntax files work, you need to have the dataset with variable names and formats as per STEPS rule - otherwise the series of commands in the syntax files will not be able to construct the indicators.
In the detailed STEPS manual (http://www.who.int/chp/steps/Part4_Section3.pdf), WHO advised to contact their STEPS analysis team at [email protected]
Hi, if you have collected data as per WHO STEP questionnaire for risk factors of non-communicable diseases, then you can go to site of WHO where you will find data entry option and analyses tool by using Epi Info.
You can analyze your data as per your requirement.
You can access this website. http://www.who.int/chp/steps/riskfactor/en/
I agree with all the other responders. From experience I have determined that SPSS is the most user-friendly statistical software for novices or for anyone who is just skidish about the inputting and processing of statistical data.
