Hi all,
I want to do electrolytic polishing for 6xxx aluminum alloys and I have a problem with pitting. I need some help choosing a solution and proper processing parameters such as voltage and current, for electrolytic polishing of AA6061-T6 and AA6061-O sheets.
I already used a solution containing HNO3 i.e., 30% HNO3- 70% Ethanol, and voltage of 6 v for 15 second.
Any advice!?

Hi, did you try with another solution? I have done electrolytic polishing in both 5083 and 7075 alloys by using a solution containing HClO4 (20ml) and ethanol (80ml) at room temperature (20-25 Celsius) , with a voltage of 10V for 60 sec (maybe more) by using a stainless steel container as the cathode...I haven't tried this solution with 6xxx alloys, but you can try, it could be useful...

1. electro polishing in solution ( 820 ml H3Po4 + 160 gr Cro3 + 135 ml H2So4 + 100 ml H2O ) with use of AL cathode in 50 voltage for 5 min.
2. etch in solution ( 25 ml HNO3 + 75 ml distilled water ) for 30-60 sec.

The nitric acid-ethanol solution works much better at low temperatures, about -10--15°C. Did you do cool the solution?
I usually use the following solution: 18% perchloric acid, 18% glycerol and 64% ethanol, at a voltage of 20 V and at room temperature.
I agree with Julian, the solution you used requires negative temperature that can go up to -30 ° C.
