I think it is possible. But there is basically 2 ways to approach such an analysis depending on what you are interested in.
If you are interested by the transient plunge phase of the pin, you will have to perform a transient thermo-mechanical analysis and considering the very large strains and strain rates involved in such analyses, explicit codes such as Abaqus explicit are recommended. But these analyses are very time consuming.
If you are interested in the steady state material flow, then an eulerian approach should be used. A Finite Element code such as Sysweld can be used for that.
