Konstantin Petrovich Lovetskiy We have used Berreman's and Yeh's formalism literally a couple of million times (and not only for one spectral point, but for complete spectra). Usually numerically solving for Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors is not only faster, but in case of the employment of analytical solutions the errors strongly accumulate, often to the point where the formalisms are unusable...
I would just note that the eigenwave approach in combination with the scattering matrix technique or adding technique is more reliable than the Berreman and Yeh techniques (see Chapter 8 of "Modeling and optimization of LCD optical performance" (Yakovlev et al.) ). Thomas Mayerhöfer I found many useful things regarding the calculation of the eigenwave parameters in bianisotropic and optically active media in your paper. But how you use the eigenwave solutions to calculate transmission and reflection coefficients of the multilayer system in this paper may give a large computational error in situations where some of the proper waves of a layer in the system are strongly damped.
Dmitry A. Yakovlev You are right! In case that absorption is high and the layer thickness is increased, at a certain thickness even singularity due to a division by zero occurs due to this problem. Since we usually deal with samples that behave like semiinfinite media, this was only a "theoretical" problem for us. I usually use Mathematica and there is a simple workaround, which is to increase the number of digits as described in Article Simplified formulas for non-normal reflection from monoclinic crystals
Nevertheless, a solution like the adding technique as it is presented in your book, is not only much more elegant, but also more (time) efficient, since increasing the precision by using more digits slows things down considerably. Certainly a much better solution!
