Look at the base of the mobile unit, salts are underlain by a negative polarity reflector, whilst mud has lower velocity than underlying material and is bounded at its base by a possitive polarity reflector.

One of the best ways I identify them is, velocity pull-ups? Yes=salt, No=mud. Top of diapir structure? Low-impedance=mud, high-amplitude=salt. Conical shape? Yes=mud, No=salt. Be aware, there are always exceptions and not always the case.
