Research on stem cells are getting so important and most research centres have started to focus on these cells. The concept of stem cell niche was proposed by Schofield in 1978 to explain the mechanisms of renewal and differentiation of stem cells. Nowadays a lot of work have bee establishing to understand the precise role of signalling cells inside the niche in every tissue. Therefore probably new opinion will appear to add some information on that concept.
Dear Nahi, I think that there are many new information became available last time about mechanism of stem cell maintenance. I think that one of the important points is a chromatin state in the stem cells. Moreover, stem cell migration is also important issue. Most people mention Schofield as the "inventor" of "stem cell niche". I am not sure whether that is correct, but I also can't pin down where we idea of a distinct stem cell compartment or niche came from. I went on culturomics.org and searched for the term stem cell niche and the term stem cell compartment and both terms appear long before Schofield's publication in 1978. In culturomics there are articles mentioned from 1976 using "stem cell niche". Who wrote this?
