I read the article and I tried to dig a lot to find something usefu, the information sound to be right, their is a story about using mitochondrial DNA was used to identify the body of Nicholas II of Russia by using Heteroplasm. I will try again and I will back to answer the question.
Yes, mitochondrial DNA can be inherited from the sperm and may contribute in different types of diseases and this phenomenon called Heteroplasm.
