I am creating a standard test solution to test the UV detector on my HPLC. Does anyone know a good (and hopefully cheap) UV active hydrophobic compound?
EDIT: My apologies, I should have been more clear. By hydrophobic, what I really need is something more hydrophobic than caffeine that will elute during the organic section of my solvent gradient .
Dear Sir. Concerning your issue about the hydrophobic UV-active compound. About 40 wt. % of a hydrophobic aromatic compound having extended conjugation in its structure and selected from the group of ##STR1## or a mixture of one or more of the above and between about 99 and about 60 wt. % of a film forming water based mixture of from about 12 to about 60 wt. % of a C8 to C14 alkyl lactam and mixtures thereof, from about 8 to about 15 wt. % of an Na or K salt of an organic surface active sulfate or sulfonate, from about 5 to about 30 wt. % of a water insoluble C10 to C20 alpha-olefin/N-vinyl lactam copolymer and from about 15 to about 40 wt. % water, I think the following below links may help you in your analysis:

Hydrophobic is a very genreal term. Assuming you want something that is completely insoluble in water I'd suggest butylated hydroxytoluene (CAS 128-37-0). You should be able to get it from most chemical suppliers for less than $1 per gram. Otherwise there are compound more or less hydrophobic than this that would work well when analyzing by UV.
Anthracene (Aldrich, 97%, £0.4 a gram) absorbs well in the range 340-380nm and is quite fluorescent at longer wavelengths.
If you want to go to shorter wavelengths, naphthalene (Aldrich, 99%, £0.03 a gram) with an absorption at around 280 nm, might also be an option.
Both are quite hydrophobic
