A widespread epidemic of Zika virus (ZIKV) infection was reported in 2015 in South and Central America and the Caribbean. A major concern associated with this infection is the apparent increased incidence of microcephaly in fetuses born to mothers infected with ZIKV.Feb 10, 2016
To my knowledge the thought of associating microcephaly with Zika was developed after the Brasilian sudden rise in affected infants. To my understanding there are no documented literature that associates the infection with the disease outcome in the African continent prior to the Brazilian incidence.
No one has actually investigated the miscarriages or microcephaly in Africa, since many countries don't have the facilities to do it, the link was never established.
