I have no experience on in vivo tumor formation, but will soon start a new project involving mouse tumor models. We have 2 cell lines in my lab. The cell lines we have are 4T1 and B16F10. I wonder which mouse (BALB/c or C57BL/6) would be better for our cell lines?

If I was considering this then I would think in terms of behavioral testing with these mice. What do you want to use them for once you create the cell line? The C57s have a stronger immune system and are smarter. I would also think in terms of litter size. Different strains produce different amounts of offspring. The C57s can see better than the BALBs. You also need to think about what happens to these two strains of mice as they age. Will their aging have an effect on your work? But in my work I mainly consider the cognitive ability and the immune susceptibility. I want mice that are smart and have a strong immune system. I use the C57s.
There are good reviews that look at these two types of mice. I would compare and contrast them using reviews aimed at what you are interested in.
Many thanks for the detailed and kind response. In this case, since our objective is to form tumor in the mouse, I think it is better to use BALB/c, that may have a weaker immune system as compared to C57BL mouse if that assumption is correct from what I understand from your response.
For sure, use 4T1 in BALB/C mice. They are highly metastatic and easy to work. The only problem is the short lifespan of mice after injection. I worked a lot with this cell line so you can ask me whatever you need.
