I am going to work with plant based proteins and carbohydrates. I want to conduct thin layer chromatography experiments for assessing the presence of proteins and carbohydrates (not in deep for amino level or saccharide level, just the presence of proteins and carbohydrates). Thin layer chromatography may be useful, using a suitable solvent as the mobile phase and a support coated on the support plate as the stationary phase. The principle of separation is adsorption. One or more samples are coated on a thin layer plate. The upper part of the thin layer plate is immersed in the developing agent, and the solvent moves along the adsorbent. The sample components move at different rates with the developing agent, depending on their affinity for the adsorbent, thus achieving component separation. Thin layer chromatography is usually used to analyze plant extracts, drugs, carbohydrates, proteins, antibiotics, vitamins, etc.
