The majority of university professors are from their specific field where they were trained
It is likely that an expert professor of his discipline or professional specialty will allow him to transmit the specific knowledge to his students; but nothing ensures that in reality this happens
At present, university professors are hired not only for having a bachelor's degree or a degree; but also, for its competence in telecommunications and computer science, for being an indispensable tool in all human knowledge and doing activities
University professors, experts in their discipline and competent in communication and computer science, are more likely to have a successful teaching practice
Training in Pedagogy or Education Sciences, are already indispensable in university professors to be better teachers, for the management in methodology and instruments to improve the significant learning of their students
Well, what I believe, it is may be depending on the situations and level of educational institutions as well as grades of student. And certainly professor have to be experienced in their own discipline.
As a professor for more than 35 years I confirm he must be an expert in educational sciences as well as specialization in order to be effective in communicating information and experiences to learners in the appropriate way.
Thanks to all who have contributed with their responses to the development of this discussion.
The contributions and recommendations coincide in adequate preparation as a more general response and others more specific about the desirability of having both disciplinary and pedagogical preparation
Like any profession, academics should undergo a pre-service training on teaching methods and learning theories in order to be aware of the nature of learning processes and learning in higher education.
By and large, continuous professional development is left to the initiative of professors and universities. However, universities are required to draw up an in-service training plan after which they can draw on limited financial support for the in-service training of professors.
University instructor should not only be knowledgable in his field but also should be open to learn effective teaching methods and strategies that help achieve intended learning outcomes and enhance the students ability to learn.
The first requirement to be a university professor is his vocation to teach, something basic in any educational field, but sometimes we forget when we talk about university. On the other hand, in addition to mastering the discipline that it imparts, it must have a solid didactic training that allows it to develop an adequate programming of the discipline, addressing aspects such as:
formulation of objectives, choice of the most appropriate methodologies, techniques and didactic resources, preparation of a discipline program, selection of complementary bibliography, ...
I like to check the consensus regarding the importance of disciplinary and pedagogical preparation in a university professor; which does not assure but if it is a good base, for its educational success.
It is important that the university teacher has knowledge of multiple educational sciences in addition to his specialty. This confirms that any expert or scientist (as in the case of university teacher) can not be creative in his field unless he has knowledge of other educational sciences, because sciences complements each other.
A professor is a person who not only owns the sum of knowledge, but also has the skills to transfer this knowledge to students. To do this, the professor must be proficient in modern pedagogical methods and technologies.
Any activity should be professional. Therefore, a professor lecturing on a subject that he studied from books is an empty place. He must at least do something himself. As for teaching, the principle of "I clearly think - I clearly state" has not been canceled yet. First of all, should present knowledge of the subject, but pedagogical mastery is only a means, not an target.
Yes! Beyond the qualification in the discipline of interest and the inherent ability to communicate, the university professor requires knowledge of the pedagogy of education; the teaching methods. I picked these up on my own by just reading them up and putting them to conscious practice. Any University professor who cares about their students should be able to do this. It's no big deal.
In the promotion of learning, the teacher's teaching or pedagogical preparation is as important as their disciplinary experience and knowledge; In other words, the medium is as important as the end, and probably more, because the medium (the method of learning to learn) is the one that achieves lifelong learning.
Well, what I believe, it is may be depending on the situations and level of educational institutions as well as grades of student. And certainly professor have to be experienced in their own discipline.
After we graduated in Spain Phd we should do ANECA certification, ANECA and magazines are more important that people, in my opinion ANECA is more that the university system. The sad situation is it does not increase anything .
Specialization is very important in one’s career and in today’s life in general, therefore I don’t think that a professor in history is obligated to have a thorough knowledge in mathematics or any other science.
