As a professor for more than 35 years I confirm he must be an expert in educational sciences as well as specialization in order to be effective in communicating information and experiences to learners in the appropriate way.
You will need to properly educated in your field to be able to teach it. You also will need to understand how to teach to be able to as well.

Like any profession, academics should undergo a pre-service training on teaching methods and learning theories in order to be aware of the nature of learning processes and learning in higher education.

The first requirement to be a university professor is his vocation to teach, something basic in any educational field, but sometimes we forget when we talk about university. On the other hand, in addition to mastering the discipline that it imparts, it must have a solid didactic training that allows it to develop an adequate programming of the discipline, addressing aspects such as:
formulation of objectives, choice of the most appropriate methodologies, techniques and didactic resources, preparation of a discipline program, selection of complementary bibliography, ...
Today multidisciplinary approach of research and teaching is required particularly with the advancement of cutting edge technologies.

It is important that the university teacher has knowledge of multiple educational sciences in addition to his specialty. This confirms that any expert or scientist (as in the case of university teacher) can not be creative in his field unless he has knowledge of other educational sciences, because sciences complements each other.
A professor is a person who not only owns the sum of knowledge, but also has the skills to transfer this knowledge to students. To do this, the professor must be proficient in modern pedagogical methods and technologies.
Any activity should be professional. Therefore, a professor lecturing on a subject that he studied from books is an empty place. He must at least do something himself. As for teaching, the principle of "I clearly think - I clearly state" has not been canceled yet. First of all, should present knowledge of the subject, but pedagogical mastery is only a means, not an target.
Yes! Beyond the qualification in the discipline of interest and the inherent ability to communicate, the university professor requires knowledge of the pedagogy of education; the teaching methods. Depends the country.
After we graduated in Spain Phd we should do ANECA certification, ANECA and magazines are more important that people, in my opinion ANECA is more that the university system. The sad situation is it does not increase anything .

Specialization is very important in one’s career and in today’s life in general, therefore I don’t think that a professor in history is obligated to have a thorough knowledge in mathematics or any other science.
