Assuming it is manganese, the link below may help.
Note however that although Table 1 lists a number of steels and shows no manganese content. This is not a guarantee. For example, depending on the source, 304L SS may contain as much as 2% Mn.
Richard Symes, thanks for your response and pdf!! I was however meaning magnesium. I'm fabricating analytical instrumentation that is very sensitive towards both Mg and Ca and I don't want these elements leaching from any components, even at the trace level. My nitric acid concentration will be fairly low and will give a pH value between 1 and 2.
Any traces of magnesium or calcium at the surface of the steel would very likely leach quickly. You might be able to pre-treat it to leach them away beforehand but I'm not an expert in this area.
