I am synthesizing Graphene Oxide from Anthracite Coal. Anthracite coal was first pre-treated with 30% HNO3 for 2 hours at 80 oC temperature. Then washed with distilled water several times until the pH of the solution got neutral. Then the coal was dried at 100 oC.

Details of synthesis method are as follows:

62 ml H2SO4 and 7 ml H3PO4 (9:1) were stirred in an ice bath. While the temperature was 0 oC,

1 g anthracite and 9 g KMnO4 (homogenously mixed) were abruptly added. Dark green color appeared (picture attached). Then the solution was kept at 35 oC for 6 hours. 46 ml water was then added and temperature was increased to 98 oC. the color of solution turned dark maroon (picture attached) after 1 h stirring I added 5 ml of H2O2 without cooling it to room temperature. Bubbles with yellow color appeared initially at the top however solution turned green (picture attached) instead of bright yellow color :-( Why is it so? Is graphene oxide prepared? Where am i mistaking?
