Why might proteins not separate well on Tricine SDS-PAGE gel?

I am trying to separate venom proteins on tricine SDS-PAGE, but separation is not good. I have tried with nature protocols and current protocols in mol bio methods, and have tried 20% and 16.5% gels. I am having problems like, smile formation, smearing and proteins not resolving in the gel. Please help.
