Hello everyone,
I've been working with the MDA-MB-468 breast cancer cell line, and I've observed something intriguing. Contrary to what I expected, I found that EGF (Epidermal Growth Factor) appears to inhibit the proliferation of these cells rather than stimulating it. This seems unusual, given that MDA-MB-468 cells are known to overexpress the EGFR (Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor).
I came across three old references (from the 90s) in the literature that mention similar findings (Article Effects of epidermal growth factor on MDA‐MB‐468 breast canc...
;Article Epidermal growth factor-mediated apoptosis of MDA-MB-468 hum...
;Article EGF-induced programmed cell death of human mammary carcinoma...
), but the explanations provided are somewhat varied and inconclusive. I am curious to know if anyone else has observed similar inhibitory effects of EGF on this or similar cell lines. What could be a rational explanation for this phenomenon? To show it grpahically, I attach here a recent result of total viable MDA-MB-468 cells cultured for 5 days with 5% FBS and stimulated or not with EGF (30ng/mL) and HRG1 (30ng/mL) starting from 15.000 cells per well in a 24w plate.
Any insights, related experiences, or suggestions for further investigation would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you in advance for your thoughts.
