I´m trying to culture B. japonicum USDA 110 (aka. B. diazoefficiens) under chemolithoautotrophic conditions in minimal saline medium. I found in the literature that this strain requires the supplementation with vitamins B, inositol and potassium iodide (KI).

I understand that under this conditions the bacteria could not synthesize de novo the vitamins and the inositol (probably needed for the biosynthesis of phospholipids?)...

But why is necessary to add KI? And how this element is used by the bacteria?
