The recent success of teixobactin by Lewis and Epstein (of Northeastern/Boston) was brought by their ability to tap into the "unculturable" bacterial strains. Turns out 99% of strains have been considered unsuitable for growing in the lab. I am asking: what properties make these bacteria so difficult to grow in a lab? Why this huge natural resource has been practically abandoned for so long?
