I am no a mathematician and therefore wont insult the field by trying to pretend to know mathematics. Though I love the subject, but I confess that I don't understand it much. Neither am I interested in any crankish probe for developing proofs of theorem that I don't understand at all. So stay assured that I am not going to enter into the territory which I don't know.

But as a matter of fact, I came across a few mathematicians who claim to have developed proof for Fermat's last theorem. They say the proof is very easy to understand and does not require specialized knowledge of number theory also. It is quite tempting that if such a tough nut has been cracked with just a simple jolt, it is worthwhile to have a look at. When I read the proof and the comments by other experts, it was as if the whole manuscript was a joke.

I have come across many such cases and I am sure there are many on RG also. And I don't think there is any harm in knowing why the proof is so important for something X raised to n plus Y raised to n equals Z raised to n. And if there is no proof, why do people/ mathematicians think it is true.

Though it may be applicable and may hold true in the examples done so far, but that is surely not the reason to think of the theorem to be true.

I would love to know more about the theorem and the obsession and the anger of mathematicians about what you call "cranks" with regards to Fermat's Last Theorem. Understanding these things will help me grow as a good person science. And I hope I do have this right.

I think you are a doctor and not mathematician.

In my life, I noticed that almost all successful doctors are curious for knowledge and are very close to arts and all branches of science.

In fact, the last Fermat's theorem represents a long story of a struggle for more than three hundreds of years. In brief, it is a story of challenge and beauty of the human creation to overcome the impossible.

Just google Fermat's Last Theorem to read thousands of articles about that legend.

You are right. I am not a mathematician. I work on some brain related diseases. You can call me a doctor if you wish. But all this does not snatch from me the right to learn other sciences or appreciate art. By that token, I got interested to learn why Fermat's Last Theorem is so important.

Suppose tomorrow someone publishes a paper with a flawless proof of Fermat's Last theorem. How will change the current state of number theory in particular and mathematics in general.

The FLT already proved by Wiles (1993-1994). But, the published proof is complicated to understand by anyone. The verification includes many abstract concepts. You should be expert in algebra, elliptic curves and many advanced tools in mathematics to understand Wiles's proof.

The new challenge is to find a different approach that makes the expected further proof simple, readable and accessible.

Many mathematicians claimed that they have a new proof as you see in the previous thread and the discussions, arguments, and objections are in progress.

Finally, FLT is useless in itself! It's all the mathematical ideas and machinery that were developed to attack it that are it's real value and legacy...

As Gauss explained as to why he did not try to solve it, there are an infinite number of propositions similar to the FLT, easily formulated and all but impossible to prove. That doesn't mean these questions are worth loosing your life over them and FLT is just an appealing example among this multitude of questions.
