People pretend to be what they are not especially on social media. They hide who they really are but pretend to be someone else. Every one want to be seen nice. Do you think they do that to be a better person?
This is a matter of personality Vs pretense. Many people do this to gain attraction or make them gain influence. Unfortunately, this does not make them any better because they are unreal and living a fake life. These people are likely going to lose value in the long run. when they eventually trap some people especially of the opposite gender, those people come into their lives with high expectations only for them to meet disappointed.
We all use some mask in the family and society. It is very difficult to live in the present society by always telling the truth and not using any mask.
We all have many unfulfilled desires in life.
So, when we get chance to show others our face covered with a mask of our desired or admired face, we want to use it.
As nobody in the social media know our actual face, we can show the mask as the original face easily.
Most of us ignore many things and I think the first objective in this life is to learn from others. People pretend because they are afraid to be judged. However (1) they will never learn the right lessons to solve their problems and worries. (2) they will never discover themselves and (3) they will never grow.
Pretention is a sort of adaptation technique from the external or internal compelling pressure to express oneself in a way which he or she is actually not. This may well be understood by the person(s) to whom it is expressed. There are every chances of unmasking or to be opened up/exposed in public or be ridiculed silently.
I can't resist citing two great quotes on pretention:
"I buried my head under the darkness of the pillow and pretended it was night. I couldn't see the point of getting up. I had nothing to look forward to"................Sylvia Plath
"I often find that people confuse inner peace with some sense of insensibility whenever something goes wrong. In such cases inner peace is a permit for destruction: The unyielding optimist will pretend that the forest is not burning either because he is too lazy or too afraid to go and put the fire out".......Criss Jami
However, it's rapidly becoming a universal chronic disease because we are, nowadays, not only pretending to others......we are pretending within ourselves too. And......it is disastrous and painful.

Pretend is a Hippo-cray which person are pretend to be what they are not sometimes in such cases it create misunderstanding between the person concern who are showing under pretension with he is not in his life .Such person are disturbing the good relative environment of the family which may not regain in their earlier shape .
Some people pretend to gain the community around it and get close to them as a result of social deterioration or as a result of personal lack or concealment of advantages that the individual does not like to declare .....
High percent of people pretend and exercise this type of behavior due to a many causes like; decline and deterioration in values and principles of a some social status, some people try to present as a hero through export his lies and cheating on the surrounded people, others behave like that to earn money illegally, while others have no or lack of educate, learn well or because, they are a psychological illness.

People pretend for many reasons. Some do that to camouflage their actual situation, some to highlight an issue, some to fill a gab that they have encountered. Mostly, people try to pretend to avoid being questioned and get peace of mind.
Because they are not happy with showing their selves
It maybe a confident issue, Or insecure about their self,
Or maybe that don't like or feel good enough to be their self with these people so they pretend.
Or maybe they have not found their self, in transition like teenager or something that has made a massive impact of their life
They may also pretend due to self protection, to keep a distant, to protect their self or to come over, show they're more outgoing, confident than they actually are, putting on a front
But mostly I would guess people pretend when they are not comfortable being them
They are somehow afraid of revealing their true identity. May because it negates the kind of live they are projecting to the world at present especially on social media.

People who lack self confidence and esteem pretend to be someone else.
Pretending someone whom you look up to or whom you cherish to be like is not good because that won't bring out your own unique qualities but you tend to look FAKE.
From a personal point of view, I believe that demonstrating and demanding demonstrations is a healthy phenomenon, uniting people towards common goals and also pressure factors against governments that deny the rights of the masses to their rights ... if the demands are legitimate
A democratic and civilized tradition that people pretend against their governments, a tradition that forms part of the culture of European peoples with their democratic governments by high standards ... for example, demonstrating for the provision of electricity and solving the problem of unemployment ...
People pretend because they don't want other to know what kind of a boring life do they have. They tend to lie to other people and invent stories that shall make their lives look exciting.
People in Europe are pretending to be the country of industry, the euro and prosperity, as people in the world of the poor pretend.
The difference is that the difference is the sharing of the cake of luxury, wealth and prosperity, and we pretend to protest the sharing of poverty, few, and underdevelopment
people are wearing masks to save their face; there are some realities in our life that are painful for us but kept as a secret. we pretend in line with our ambitions or dreams. we are ambitious but confined creatures. how to reach them? by pretending what we are willing to achieve.
All the people in the world are pretending to demand higher salaries and less hours of work than the Japanese people, that is the strange people, who pretend that the departments of companies and factories increase the working hours !! Because the increase in working hours earn higher salaries, this is the equation of the Japanese people, increasing salaries associated with increasing working hours, and then increase production. In fact, the story of the Japanese people is a wonderful story. It is the story of the man who does not despair, no matter what the obstacles are. He is the story of the man who learns from the setbacks he goes through. Instead of pushing him back, he is pushing him forward. Japan after the Second World War was completely destroyed by it. Which was issued by former US President Harry Truman to launch a nuclear bomb on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, after Japan refused to comply with the will of the victorious states to declare Japan's surrender. Three days later, the United States launched the second bomb on Nagasaki, killing nearly a quarter of a million people Days ago E, which is the only nuclear bomb used in the wars in the world, which is launched by an advocate of human rights at the UN level, the United States of America! Although Japan signed the surrender document to the victorious forces after the nuclear bombs on August 15, 1945, the Japanese people decided not to give up. In a strange will and challenge, the Japanese decided to achieve another concept of victory. The guns, bombs and missiles were never instruments of victory. In a half century, the Japanese have built a second-ranking economic power in the world, and many of its giants have a global reputation, such as Toyota, Panasonic, Sony, and other companies that have reached every spot in the world.
